The Rox is a cunning and intelligent species known for its agility and strong familial ties. They can live remarkably long lives, with the average lifespan ranging between 50 to 200 years. According to legend, the "Mother Rox," a revered figure in their mythology, lived to the astonishing age of 500. Roxes gestate for six months and typically give birth to litters of six to eight kits. Their habitats range from open fields and meadows to the brush lines of forests, with some adapting to life in mountainous cliffside regions.

Biology

Roxes are agile and well-adapted runners, possessing powerful back legs and longer forearms, which allow them to sprint rather than hop like rabbits. Their long, fluffy tails keep them warm, while their rigid ears, reinforced with thick cartilage, enhance their hearing. They have a unique dental structure with two prominent front teeth and strong canines, enabling them to process a diverse diet. Despite their small stature, Roxes are incredibly strong and capable creatures.

Social Behavior

Roxes live in family units or clans, which can span multiple generations. Their homes are intricate burrow systems, featuring:
-
A communal den room for socializing, adorned with pelts, dry grasses, and other cozy materials.
-
Specialized rooms for food storage and nursing young.
-
Individual bedrooms, uniquely decorated by each inhabitant with collected treasures such as soft moss, twigs, or colorful stones.

Rox clans are known for their strong territorial bonds and can engage in rivalries or conflicts with other clans. Despite their occasional mischief and tendency to play tricks, their familial loyalty is unshakable.
habitat

Roxes thrive in diverse ecosystems but are most often found in open areas such as fields and meadows. They prefer sunny environments where they can bask and keep watch for predators. While they occasionally venture deeper into forests, Roxes feel most at ease in spaces where they can remain alert to danger. Their burrow systems are carefully designed to provide safety and comfort, often including hidden escape routes leading to the forest.
Some Roxes have been observed living on mountain cliffs, showcasing their adaptability to harsher environments.

Domestication
However, Domesticated roxes will happily dig holes in your backyard, lay claim to your livingroom and be just as happy on a soft pillow.

Roxes are affectionate and playful creatures, making them ideal pets. They thrive on interaction and enjoy activities such as snuggling, playing, and racing. Domesticated Roxes form strong bonds with their owners and adapt well to a life of companionship, reflecting their natural tendency for social connection and loyalty.
Predators
The primary predator of the Rox is the dragon, which finds them especially delicious when fire-roasted. Racing, a favorite pastime among Roxes, can make them vulnerable to dragon attacks, as it distracts them and leaves them exposed.

Despite these threats, Roxes’ intelligence, speed, and strong familial bonds have enabled them to endure and thrive in their environments.

Particularily cunning roxes have saved their hides from dragon attack, by hoarding precious gems like rubies or emeralds or coins to attempt to bargain or 'buy' their freedom. because of this, some dragons have taken a 'mafia' style approach, and will protect a rox family from other dragons... for a price.
diet
Roxes are omnivorous, consuming a balanced diet of plants and meats. Their sharp front teeth allow them to shear fibers from plants, while their canines enable them to hunt small prey. A typical Rox diet includes:
-
Plant-based foods: Leaves, vegetables, fruits, and fibrous materials.
-
Meat: Small animals like mice and rabbits, as well as insects.
Though adaptable and opportunistic eaters, Roxes are not particularly picky and will make use of available resources to sustain themselves.
History / mythology
The Great Scorching and Mother Rox

Long ago, Roxes faced near extinction during the Great Scorching. A clan of dragons burned their fields and preyed upon them, leaving only a handful of adults and numerous young kits as survivors. Among the adults, a single Rox stepped up to guide and protect the orphans, teaching them to survive and rebuild. Over generations, she became known as the "Mother Rox," a symbol of hope, unity, and resilience.

Stories of Mother Rox are passed down through generations, shaping the cultural identity of the species. Some Roxes believe she lived for 500 years, while others regard her longevity as a myth. Regardless, her legacy remains a cornerstone of Rox society.

Community Roleplay Origins

In 2006, a roleplay community centered around the Rox species emerged, envisioning a shared world with meadows, forests, and a mountainous gorge. Despite the natural predator-prey dynamic between Roxes and dragons, the story introduced unique scenarios where dragons domesticated Roxes or even interbred with them, creating hybrid subspecies:
-
Dabbit: Roxes with leathery wings
-
Drox: Larger, more robust Rox-like creatures
